Why 1-on-1 Reading Instruction is a Game Changer for Students with ADHD and Dyslexia

For students with ADHD and dyslexia, reading in class can feel like swimming against the current—it’s exhausting, frustrating, and often leaves them feeling stuck.

The International Dyslexia Association estimates that about 30% of students with dyslexia also have ADHD. Early identification and targeted intervention are crucial for their future as readers and writers.

Even in top-notch schools with dedicated teachers and skilled specialists, the school day often falls short in addressing crucial foundational reading and writing skills, particularly for students with ADHD and reading difficulties.

1-on-1, evidence-based reading instruction outside of school can help these students catch up to their peers in reading in months!

1-on-1 Instruction Accelerates Reading Progress

In many school settings, time constraints and the need to teach groups of students   with different needs can make it challenging for even the most experienced teachers to provide the focused support that students with ADHD reading difficulties need.

For students with inattentive-type ADHD, staying focused during group instruction in a classroom setting can be difficult, and for students with hyperactive/impulsive-type ADHD, sitting still for long periods can be tough.

A Distraction-Free Zone for Rapid Growth

For many students with ADHD, trying to focus in their classroom might feel like trying to focus in the middle of a carnival—overwhelmed by noise, movement, and visual distractions, their attention can quickly drift, especially when there is reading involved.

One-on-one tutoring is far more flexible and can be adapted to each student's needs. Working in a quiet place at home, maybe even with a noise-canceling headset, minimizes the distractions. Plus, your tutor will notice immediately when your child is distracted and help them re-focus their attention on the lesson. This personalized approach helps students stay engaged and on-task, and really boosts their progress in reading and spelling.

Let Them Move!

Students who need to fidget, stand or move around while learning can do that during 1-on-1 tutoring, without distracting other kids in a classroom. Students can stand (maybe even on a balance board!) or switch between standing and sitting whenever they want to. Their tutoring sessions might include short, scheduled breaks to move and stretch.

For some students, bouncing on a mini-trampoline or swinging in a hammock during all or part of the lesson is the ticket to helping them focus on their learning. You know your student best - talk to your tutor about what will help your student focus and learn the material, and get caught up to their peers as quickly as possible.

The Takeaway: A Faster Path to Reading Success

While well-informed classroom instruction can support students with ADHD and dyslexia, it often falls short of meeting their individualized needs and helping students become fluent readers and good spellers.

Personalized reading instruction provides a clear and effective path forward. One-on-one tutoring can help your student gain the skills and confidence they need to excel in school and life!
