Kids Up Reading Coaches is proud to announce that we are working with the YMCA of Southern Arizona to provide reading and spelling instruction to students in the YMCA's after-care program.

Kids Up Reading Coaches has been tutoring students who are struggling with reading and spelling over Zoom since 2020.  Fast forward a few years, and we've developed a new program that will exponentially increase the number of students we support, both directly and indirectly.

Directly - through a partnership with the YMCA to work with students whose families don't have the time or the means to pay for private tutoring.  

And indirectly - by training the next generation of educators.  

Our tutors are undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education, linguistics, speech-language pathology and related programs at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University.  We've trained our tutors in the Science of Reading and Orton-Gillingham techniques. They're putting what they've learned into practice by tutoring YMCA students, and some day they'll be teachers in classrooms, teaching entire classes of students to read, as well as special ed teachers, speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, principals, etc. - all with a deep understanding of how children learn to read and spell.  

In this new YMCA program, students will remain at a YMCA site while working 1-on-1 with their tutor over Zoom, for three or four days/week. The YMCA will supervise the students and provide laptops, headsets and a quiet work environment.  

The tutoring program has started at the YMCA's Mulcahy and Ott sites, and will expand to other Y sites in southern Arizona.  The students in the programs are in grades 1-5.

Kids Up Reading Coaches will work with students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia / dysgraphia as well as those who have been identified by their school, parents or the YMCA as at-risk for reading difficulties.
