***Reading and Spelling Tutoring for YMCA students***

In Spring 2024, Kids Up Reading Coaches worked with the YMCA of Southern Arizona to provide reading and spelling instruction to students in the YMCA's after-care program.

Kids Up Reading Coaches has been tutoring students who are struggling with reading and spelling over Zoom since 2020.  In January 2024, we developed a new program to exponentially increase the number of students we support, both directly and indirectly.

Directly - through a partnership with the YMCA to work with students whose families don't have the time or the means to pay for private tutoring.

And indirectly - by training the next generation of educators.

Our YMCA tutors are undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education, linguistics, speech-language pathology and related programs at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University.  We've trained our tutors in the Science of Reading and Orton-Gillingham techniques. They're putting what they've learned into practice by tutoring YMCA students, and some day they'll be teachers in classrooms, teaching entire classes of students to read, as well as Special Ed teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists, school psychologists, principals, etc. - all with a deep understanding of how children learn to read and spell.

Students in grades K-5 work 1-on-1 with their tutors over Zoom during their YMCA after-care program, three or four days/week. The YMCA supervises the students and provides laptops, headsets and a quiet work environment.

Note: The Kids Up Reading Coaches/YMCA partnership was discontinued in May 2024, when funding ran out. Both sides are exploring other funding opportunities, and Kids Up Reading Coaches is also exploring starting up a similar program with another after-care provider.  If you have any suggestions for us, or are interested in partnering with us to provide 1-on-1 reading and spelling tutoring at your after-care program,  please contact Daniela@KidsUpReadingCoaches.com.
